PITZHANGER MANOR & WALPOLE PARK, EALING
Project context
Pitzhanger Manor is an internationally significant historic villa situated in Ealing, West London, which was designed by the greatest British architect of the early nineteenth century, Sir John Soane. Ealing Council sought a team to improve the visitor experience within the house and its surrounding landscape.
Role
From the creative tender through to Scheme Design, I acted as Project Leader for Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA), within the wider multi-disciplinary design team, developing the interpretation of Soane's country villa and its landscape setting.
Impact
This work contributed towards successful Heritage Lottery Fund grant applications for both house and park.
Through restoration and interpretation the project reconnected Pitzhanger with its original Regency landscape surroundings, which is now a much-loved urban resource - Walpole Park. Firmly rooted within the community of Ealing, the project aimed to attract audiences through an innovative and challenging interpretation of the site that makes its heritage relevant and exciting for the 21st century.
