DESIGN MUSEUM, KENSINGTON

Project context

The Design Museum was planning a move from its base in Shad Thames to the site of the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington. In doing so it sought to widen its audience from designers to those outside the industry.

A consultancy called From Now On (now renamed Forth) had been working with the Museum to develop its masterplan. They brought me into the team for interpretation development.

Role

I worked with From Now On to develop the interpretation strategy for the new museum, including the concept for its new permanent exhibition. I also developed content briefs to inform the architectural and wayfinding design throughout the site.

Impact

This work contributed to the Design Museum's successful round 2 application to the Heritage Lottery Fund. The interpretation has now been implemented in the museum - the permanent exhibition Designer Maker User is based on this concept work. The new museum opened in November 2016. It won the European Museum of the Year Award 2018.
