I am a heritage interpretation consultant, with 20 years’ experience developing audience-focused exhibition, design and media projects and contributing to successful funding applications.
I specialise in content development and project management for museums, cultural organisations and public learning spaces.
My work brings together lifelong interests in history, storytelling, architecture and design. At the centre of these lies a desire to create connections between people and places, past and present, for the benefit of all.
My approach is driven by values of health and wellbeing, connected relationships, kindness, community, and creativity. I am passionate about widening access to culture, telling meaningful stories, and creating shared resources.
I have a BA in History and History of Art from the University of Birmingham. I started my career at the BBC, gaining research, production and storytelling experience while developing factual and entertainment television programmes. Following this I worked in a small communications design agency, acting as the bridge between clients and designers, developing creative ideas and copywriting.
Moving into the field of exhibition design I brought these interests together - in order to tell stories within spaces. I worked for Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) for over six years as a Senior Content Developer - developing the narrative for projects, for tenders and new business, for funders and stakeholders. In between periods of consultancy I worked as Creative Programming and Interpretation Manager for Historic Royal Palaces.
I have developed projects in museums, heritage sites, castles, palaces, parks and housing estates, as well as an archaeological site and an opera house. This has ranged from masterplanning for new museums to the re-development of existing ones, and temporary exhibitions to permanent installations.
I work in close collaboration with clients and audience representatives, curators and learning specialists, designers, architects and surveyors. I have worked on projects for and with these organisations and practices and as a freelance associate for cultural consultancies Barker Langham and From Now On (now renamed Forth).
I keep up with CPD and best practice via museum and heritage organisations and sources outside the sector.
My volunteering interests have focused on the areas of education, community and migration. I have mentored children in creative writing at the Ministry of Stories and enjoyed welcoming clients at the NNLS Drop-In Centre for Destitute Asylum Seekers.
